Breathwork and Altered States of Consciousness

Conscious Connected Breathwork works directly with the brain and nervous system, creating powerful shifts in awareness and healing.

How Conscious Connected Breathwork Rewires the Brain

Our minds are wired for patterns. These habits and mental shortcuts help us survive and stay efficient, but they also have a shadow side. When those loops go unchecked, they trap us in cycles of stress, overthinking, and repeating the same stories about who we are.

In modern life, we rarely experience the kind of extreme shocks that once broke those loops hunger, exhaustion, exposure to nature, or initiation rites that pushed people to their edge. Instead, we’re surrounded by constant, low-grade stressors: inboxes, traffic, deadlines, and overstimulation. This doesn’t awaken us  it keeps us locked in survival mode.

This is where conscious connected breathwork becomes a medicine for our times. By working directly with the breath, we can disrupt rigid patterns in the brain and open new pathways for healing and transformation.

The Brain’s Autopilot: The Default Mode Network

Neuroscience has identified a system in the brain called the default mode network (DMN). It’s active when our attention turns inward when we’re daydreaming, telling ourselves stories, or reliving the past. It shapes our identity and even our moral reasoning.

But when the DMN gets stuck on repeat, it recycles old fears, traumas, and limiting beliefs. That endless inner chatter? That’s the DMN running your mind like a broken record.

Many people try to “quiet the mind” through force  clamping down on thought or pushing away distractions. But psychiatrist Stanislav Grof, who pioneered therapeutic breathwork in the 1970s, suggested the opposite: healing often begins when we let go of control. His insight, now supported by neuroscience, is that breathwork can shift the brain in ways similar to psychedelics, by opening us to expanded states of consciousness.

Breathwork in the Lab

Recent studies have taken this out of workshops and into the lab. Researchers invited experienced practitioners into a setting that recreated the feel of a real session. Some practiced conscious connected breathing with continuous, unbroken breaths without pause while others simply breathed normally with music.

What they found was remarkable.

Those practicing conscious connected breathwork dropped their carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels from the usual 36–40 mmHg down to around 20 mmHg levels that in a medical context would signal illness, but here represented a controlled shift. As CO₂ dropped, their reported depth of altered states rose.

In other words: the breath alone changed body chemistry in a way that rewired consciousness.

Altered States Without Substances

To measure these states, researchers used the same questionnaires designed for psychedelic studies: the Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ-30) and the 11-Dimensional Altered States of Consciousness scale.

The results showed that conscious connected breathwork induced states comparable to moderate doses of psilocybin (the active compound in magic mushrooms). In some areas, breathwork even scored higher than MDMA.

This shows us something profound: our breath can open the same doorways as psychedelic medicine but without substances, using only the innate intelligence of the body.

How Breathwork Rewires the Brain

So what’s happening inside the brain?

When CO₂ drops, blood vessels in the brain constrict. Within seconds, this reduces blood flow to the prefrontal cortex, the region that normally manages self-control, planning, and filtering thoughts. As this activity quiets, the brain’s grip on thought and emotion loosens.

Neuroscientists call this transient hypofrontality a temporary silencing of the “thinking brain.” This same mechanism is thought to underlie the runner’s high, deep meditation states, and mystical experiences.

As the prefrontal cortex softens, the default mode network also loosens its hold. The repetitive inner loops begin to unravel, old emotions surface, and the mind becomes more flexible. This is what Grof once described as “breaking rigid patterns.” Now, science can explain the mechanism.

Pivotal Mental States: The Reset Button

Psychologists describe these windows as pivotal mental states moments when the brain becomes unusually plastic, able to reorganise itself rapidly. Evolution preserved this mechanism because in times of crisis, flexibility could mean survival.

Conscious connected breathwork deliberately creates this reset. By pushing the body out of its ordinary balance, it opens a gateway where the mind can rewire itself. And when practiced in a safe, supportive space, this becomes a doorway to deep healing and transformation.

The Promise and the Balance

The Berlin study showed just how powerful this reset can be. In a single session, breathwork altered body chemistry, opened mystical states, and created lasting improvements in mood.

But it’s important to recognize: plasticity is a double-edged sword. A mind made pliable can heal and expand or it can imprint fear and confusion if not held safely. This is why both ancient traditions and modern facilitators emphasize ritual, safety, and integration.

With skilled guidance, conscious connected breathwork becomes not just a technique, but a sacred tool for transformation. It silences the inner chatter, releases stored trauma, and reconnects us to the wholeness that was always within us.

Breath as Gateway

Your breath is with you from your first moment to your last. Most of the time, it runs quietly in the background. But when used with intention, it becomes the most powerful reset button we have.

Conscious connected breathwork shows us that the breath is not just for survival  it is for awakening. Through something so simple, we have the power to heal, expand, and remember who we truly are.
